July 27, 2007 -- Sara Lee Food & Beverage has issued a precautionary recall of selected whole-wheat breads that may contain small pieces of metal.

Sara Lee's communications director, Mark Goldman, tells WebMD that the company issued the voluntary recall after company inspectors noticed that a whole-wheat sifting screen didn't meet specification and that small pieces of metal could have dislodged from that sifting screen.

"We immediately stopped production and inspected the situation and instituted the voluntary recall out of an abundance of consumer caution," says Goldman.

Goldman tells WebMD that Sara Lee has received "a few consumer complaints" and is following up on those complaints. "But we actually identified the situation through our manufacturing inspection process, not from consumers bringing it to our attention," Goldman says.

Sara Lee Bread Recall

The Sara Lee whole-wheat bread recall only applies to the products listed below that have the code "222" on the packaging and are stamped with "Best if purchased by" dates that fall between July 25, 2007 and Aug. 7, 2007.

The affected products are made at the company's bakery in Meridian, Miss., and sold at grocery retailers in Mississippi, Alabama, most of Arkansas, far southeastern Missouri, western Georgia, southwestern Tennessee, southeastern Louisiana, and the Florida panhandle.

Sara Lee Food & Beverage strongly encourages consumers to check the packaging of any of the recalled products to determine whether they are included in the recall.

The recalled products shouldn't be eaten. Instead, return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

The recall doesn't apply to any other Sara Lee products. Sara Lee says it's working with the FDA on the recall.

Consumers can call Sara Lee's consumer line at (800) 683-3466 with questions or concerns from 9 a.m.?to 4:30 p.m. central time.
