Sept. 5, 2008 -- The Hershey Company is recalling 7.25-ounce plastic bottles of Hershey's Chocolate Shell Topping, which can be poured over ice cream, because it contains almonds that aren't noted on the label.
"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product," states a Hershey news release, adding that "the product is completely safe for consumers who do not have an allergy or sensitivity to almonds."
No illnesses linked to Hershey's Chocolate Shell Topping had been reported as of yesterday, according to Hershey's news release posted on the FDA's web site.
The recall doesn't include any other Hershey's confectionery items or other shell toppings.
The Hershey Company says it issued the voluntary recall after a consumer reported the issue. A Hershey investigation found that "a small portion of a Heath's Shell Topping production run used bottles labeled Hershey's Chocolate Shell Topping."
