June 24, 2010 -- More than 2 million cribs are being recalled by Evenflo, Delta, and five other manufacturers.

The recall swells to about 9 million the number of drop-side cribs recalled in the last five years, says Consumer Reports safety expert Don Mays.

"They outsource the manufacture of these cribs and are using very inferior hardware to make the side go up and down," Mays tells WebMD. "And if the hardware breaks or loosens, it opens a dangerous gap where a child can fall out or get trapped -- and possibly suffocate against the mattress."

The Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced the recalls. The CPSC is getting ready to issue a ruling widely expected to end the sale of drop-side cribs.

Drop sides are not the only problem with cribs. Some of the cribs recalled today are stationary-side cribs that can be assembled upside down, creating a potentially deadly entrapment danger.

"The instructions on some of these cribs are so vague that consumers are assembling them incorrectly. In our opinion, these things should be foolproof and only go together one way," Mays says.

Other problems with the cribs include wooden slats that break and mattress supports that break or come loose.

The cribs recalled today include:

For complete information on these products, including the model numbers and specific model names, see the CSPC web site.

Mays noted that ASTM International, which sets manufacturing standards, last September proposed elimination of drop-side cribs. He said that major retailers, such as Walmart and Toys 'R' Us, no longer carry these products.
