This book is a detailed text covering metabolic and physiologic alterations, nutrient requirements, and treatments in critical illness. In addition, the book has special sections related to pregnancy, neonates, children, and the aged. Other sections deal with organ failure, ethics, quality, and economics.
Seventy-six authors contributed to the book. The book is divided into 8 sections, each of which comprises several chapters. The sections are logically divided as follows: "Metabolic Alterations in the Critically Ill," "Nutrients for the Critically Ill," "Delivery of Nutrition Support in the Critically Ill," "Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle in the Critically Ill," "Physiology Stress," "Specific Organ System Failure," "General Systemic Failures," and "Professional Issues." Overall, the scope of the book is comprehensive in its design and it covers all possible areas of interest concerning the nutrition of the critically ill.
The book's chapters are informative and the sections on metabolic alterations in, nutrients for, and the physiology of critical illness are excellent. The practical issues relating to the delivery of enteral and parenteral nutrition are balanced in their recommendations, and the author of this section critically examined the voluminous but murky literature relating to critical care.
My main critique of the book relates to the way that the information is conveyed. Although the chapters on the delivery of nutrition are comprehensive, practical information to allow a novice to troubleshoot complications related to enteral and parenteral nutrition is not provided. The inclusion of tables and diagrams integrating this type of information would have been useful. Furthermore, a list of the important points in each chapter would have helped highlight the message to be conveyed.
The book is moderately priced considering its comprehensive nature and relative to other texts with a similar scope. This is an excellent book, which will provide a wealth of details for mature clinicians and investigators and as a reference text on nutritional support. On the other hand, it is not a handy manual to be used at the bedside.
