This book presents a complementary intermingling of the scientific basis and practical application of sports nutrition. As a second edition, it is almost 300 pages longer than its predecessor, and all chapters were thoroughly updated and several new chapters were added. The Australian editors organized the work of 38 international contributors into 26 chapters to produce a comprehensive reference that is especially useful for sports nutritionists and other practitioners in sports-related fields.

The first chapter sets the stage with a concise review of key developments in the science of sports nutrition dating from the 6th century BC to the present. The remaining chapters are organized to provide a review of the chapter topic followed by a section containing sports nutrition "practice tips." For example, chapter 2 reviews basic concepts in exercise physiology and metabolism and the practice tips summarize how these concepts can be applied to various types of exercise training and competition.

Two chapters cover the nutritional status and anthropometric assessment of athletes. These practical and well-organized chapters present the various techniques used for assessment and discuss their strengths and limitations. Protein and amino acid needs of athletes are reviewed, and the effects of various types of exercise on protein metabolism are discussed thoroughly. The potential effects of excessive protein intake are discussed and practice tips provide guidelines for meeting the protein and amino acid needs of different types of athletes.

Concepts and issues related to energy expenditure and balance are divided into 4 chapters. The first chapter explains energy requirements in the context of macronutrient balance. This perspective is especially important to athletes because energy substrate availability can affect exercise performance and potentially influence long-term changes in body composition. The other 3 chapters cover weight loss, achieving target weights in weight-division sports, and eating disorders in athletes.

The coverage of micronutrient nutrition continues the functional and applied perspectives of the book. Bone health, iron nutrition, and antioxidant needs are emphasized along with basic concepts related to vitamin and mineral nutrition in athletes. Chapters are included on nutrition before, during, and after exercise and on nutritional strategies to enhance fat oxidation during aerobic exercise. A substantial review of dietary supplements and their use by athletes is included. Additionally, several chapters address the nutritional needs of special populations, including child athletes, older athletes, vegetarian athletes, and athletes with diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, and other disabilities.

By current textbook standards, most chapters are sparsely illustrated. However, the black and white figures are clear and of good quality. Most chapters contain many tables that summarize data and concepts efficiently and all chapters are well referenced.

The editors have assembled a comprehensive source of current information on the science and application of sports nutrition. Australia may be down under geographically, but the Australian editors of this textbook are on top of sports nutrition.
