Researchers at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, have found that sodium acts as a switch for a major neurotransmitter receptor in the brain, known as the kainate receptor. Balancing kainate receptor activity is essential for maintaining normal brain function. Drugs that could shut down this activity could be beneficial since excessive kainate activity has been linked to numerous brain disorders, including epilepsy and neuropathic pain.
