    Extraction of Essential Oil from Curcuma phaeocaulis by Supercritical Fluid Extraction

    Abstract To develop a method for the extraction of essential oil from Curcuma phaeocaulis Val. by supercritical fluid extra c tion (SFE), and analysis of its composition by capillary GC and GC/MS spectromet ry. Conditions for the super critical fluid CO2 extraction were studied in co m parison with Soxhlet extraction (SX) and steam distillation (SD). The optimum c o ndition for SFE was found to be: 12 mL of CO2 and 5 mL ethyl alcohol at a pres sure of 20.0 MPa, and 55 ℃ temperature for 40 min. 33 compounds were identifi ed by CGC and GC/MS spectrometry. The SFE method was found to be superior than ei ther SX or SD extraction.
